Wenn die kan Almdudler hab'n, geh' i wieder ham!

This weekend I have my friend P staying and so far she has had to basically mooch around the house sitting very still and talking in low tones to help aid my hangover recovery - more on that in a minute.

But she has brought me a present which was the first thing yesterday to put a smile on my face - well as much of a smile as I could muster without being sick:

I met P when I was in Austria on my placement year from university. A group of us worked as English Assistants and had the time of our lives travelling round Europe with our copious amounts of free time and spare money. But of course, all of this was undertaken with the sole intention of improving our German - and it worked - so I consider it something of a working (year-long) holiday.

One of my favourite Austrian specialities was a fizzy drink called Almdudler, which you can't buy over here but in Austria is second only to Coca Cola in its popularity.

I don't really know how to describe it. P says it is "foul". I say it is "lushness carbonated".

Incidentally, Austria is one of the most fabulous places in the world and I am sure I will rave about it lots more as in general life I don't tend to shut up about it, but sadly I haven't been able to get back there since I left about 8 years ago. This means that I have not tasted this sweet nectar for almost a decade.

So in my severely hungover state yesterday, when P produced a bottle of Almdudler which she had brought me back from her recent trip, my face might have said "Get out the way, I'm going to vomit!" but inside I was celebrating.

I didn't want to waste it yesterday so it's currently chilling in the fridge ready for a pretty special tasting session later today. Mmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmm.

As a little side note, Milka chocolate (also in the picture) is made in a town called Bludenz which was very close to where I lived, and when you got off the train there, the whole town smelled of chocolate. Cuuuuute.
